Connie Park/NYT WirecutterIf you’ve ever been to Singapore or Malaysia and treated yourself to a kaya toast — slices of crust-less toast sandwiching a dreamy coconut spread and thick slabs of cold salted butter — this little jar can take you right back to one of the humble coffee shops (or kopitiam) where this humble yet delectable snack is served. The Srikaya jar is more coconut- and egg-forward, with a hint of pandan which, for the uninitiated, reads like a greener, headier vanilla.Moon Man’s thicker, custardy pandan kaya jam is a more modern (and slickly-branded) version, redolent with the grassy-herby scent of pandan leaves. It makes a great kaya toast, too, but its texture and sweetness are more dessert-y.One of our testers gushed, “I’m really quite into this! Sweet, slightly grassy, a nice fluffy texture, somehow slightly cooling.” You may find yourself sneaking a spoonful after dinner.
