Coach Reimagines New York City Skate Culture Through an 'Ozian' Lens

Although our era of “Wicked” releases has come to an end, the Oz universe’s impact remains in pop culture as always — including in Stuart Vever’s latest collection for Coach, shown Wednesday in New York City. Fresh off a Christmas rewatch of the original “The Wizard of Oz” with his children, Vevers says he was inspired by “seeing the joy in their faces when it transitioned from black and white into that explosion of Ozian color.” Set in a dimly lit venue with nearly 70-foot ceilings, Coach’s Fall 2026 show space set the tone for a cinematic experience. The first model, wearing a look composed entirely of shades of gray, made their entrance perfectly timed to the bright white of a jarring spotlight, initiating the presentation as dramatically as the MGM lion.A grayscale chapter began the show, comprising leather jackets layered under plaid blazers, Miss Gulch-like prairie dresses with torn lace hems and knee-length dark denim shorts. Then, bursts of color began to trickle in (just like Dorothy’s tornado transition) via powder-blue suede varsity jackets, violet leather zip-ups and, of course, ruby-red sneakers “laced” together with a hefty metal hook-and-eye closure.

Blended with the aesthetics of Oz was an unexpected additional theme: skate culture. When asked what prompted the pairing of the two worlds, Vevers told Fashionista, “It was an American mix. I’ve always had a passion for and been drawn to youth culture, whether it’s the youth culture of today or from decades ago. Exploring that through an American house, it feels authentic, it feels really natural. It’s kind of the thing that excites me.”While strutting down the runway, each model looked like an elevated version of a cool, stylish New York City student on their way home from class. Each garment looks tattered and distressed as if its wearer suffered several scrapes at the skatepark — from the ripped seams on jorts down to the thick, scrunched-up socks with holes that were featured in every outfit.”I’m always inspired by the next generation. And the most important thing I think is to listen, to be empathetic and to try and connect with how people are feeling,” Vevers continued. “And sometimes it’s just as simple as that. I don’t overthink it, honestly.”Ahead, see all the looks from Coach’s Fall 2026 collection.
