Sergio Hudson's 10-Year Anniversary Show Sticks to the Classics — With a Touch of Whimsy

“I think the Sergio Hudson woman is a woman who wants real clothes that will stand the test of time,” the designer told Fashionista backstage ahead of his Fall 2026 show at the New York Public Library on Friday night. “[She wants] classic clothing that still makes her feel modern and look brand new every time she wears them. I want you to be able to put on my suit 20 years from when you bought it and say, ‘Wow, this suit looks amazing on me.'”Perhaps that eye for timelessness is why Hudson’s been able to stay in the game for a decade — a milestone fewer indie designers are achieving these days. For Fall 2026, the New York-based label celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a collection that homed in on all its signatures.Tailoring has always been where Hudson shines brightest. After all, his clean-cut suits have been worn by the likes of Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Blake Lively. The fall collection featured several matching pantsuits with cinched waists and power shoulders. But Hudson also welcomed a touch more whimsy than usual, namely in the closing lineup of evening gowns boasting voluminous proportions. Over the years, the designer has received criticism that his penchant for sharp tailoring and body-conscious silhouettes makes his clothes “unwearable.” That (unasked-for) opinion has been heard by the designer. But he respectfully disagrees.”I’m so classic in my design aesthetic that it’s rebellious against all of the, ‘Let’s make stuff comfortable; this is what women want,'” he explained. “I’m like, ‘Yeah they want that, but they want this, too.’ There’s a woman who wants to look pulled up and wants to be snatched. That is the Sergio Hudson woman.”As the designer looks toward his brand’s next 10 years, he hopes the fashion industry will reach a point where Black designers are recognized for their work rather than their race, he shared.”My goal is to normalize people that look like me in this industry, to where we don’t have to say, ‘Black designer Sergio Hudson is showing at New York Fashion Week,’ and we can just say, ‘Sergio Hudson is showing at New York Fashion Week,'” he shared. “I love being Black, but I’m a designer. The undertones of that are, ‘Wow, you’re successful even though you’re Black.’ I want to normalize [being recognized for work]. I don’t want to be one of four [Black designers].”See all the looks from Sergio Hudson Fall 2026 below.
