If you’ve tried waffle-weave towels before and disliked them, they may have been made of linen. While linen waffle towels are great in their own way, they are usually a bit scratchy and less absorbent. The Onsen towel, made of 100% Supima cotton, has some of the satisfying texture of linen towels, but it feels plush and eager to soak up water. The lattice weave creates cushioned air pockets that are very absorbent but still dry super fast.I particularly love how compactly this towel folds. I don’t have a ton of storage space, and two of these towels stacked on top of each other are about the size of one thick terry towel, which makes a big difference. The Onsen waffle towel has been a pick in our towel guide since 2018. Not only has it passed the rigors of our own testing, but it has also gained a loyal fan base among our staff. Staff writer Dorie Chevlen says that she too has a textural aversion to terry towels, and that “the Onsen is the only towel I can use without shuddering.”Senior editor Courtney Schley says the lightweight hand-towel size works great as a hair towel (which I’ve also appreciated). And senior staff writer Kimber Streams says, “Every guest who has stayed with us since we got those towels has asked about them and expressed an interest in buying them.” That’s been exactly my experience as well.
