Designer Rachel Scott had a lot to prove at Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2026 runway show on Wednesday. Creative director debuts are always met with great anticipation, but with Scott being one of the very few women and designers of color in such a role, it was especially exciting to see what she would propose for the brand (particularly after it had been helmed by two white men for 14 years).Naturally, her starting point began with a deep dive into the archives, she told a group of press backstage after the show. “I tried to understand who the woman was,” she explained. “I spent a lot of time meeting with the customers and with the actual Proenza Schouler woman and understanding who she was and how I could bring her something new for her life moving forward.”That led her to craft a collection centered around rejecting perfection and embracing complexity: Dresses are slightly rumpled, draping appears irregular and skirts are twisted across the back. “As a woman, I find perfection imprisoning,” Scott said. “So I wanted to have a bit more complexity and texture to her […] and give her that grace. I wanted to move toward precision and give her self-authorship over how she’s viewed in the world. She can be as perfect or as imperfect as she wants to be.”Scott’s vision for the new Proenza Schouler woman is to equip her with a versatile wardrobe that’s purposeful, sharp and realistic for everyday life. “[These clothes] are for a new New York woman, a global woman, who is aware of what the world asks of her but is unwilling to acquiesce to expectations,” the show notes read.Ahead, see every look from the Proenza Schouler Fall 2026 collection.
