Apple Just Unveiled a Folding iPhone, and It Looks Good
AppleThe latest Apple Watch models, the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, measure your heart rate every five seconds, 60 times more frequently than prior models. The watches will now be able to display a real-time heart rate on the watch face, and heart-rate variability, which the watches use to help measure stress and recovery, is sampled up to every five minutes. Apple claims that the Apple Watch has the most accurate heart-rate sensing of any wearable device. In addition to continuous heart-rate monitoring, the Apple Watches have a new Readiness feature similar to those offered by Whoop and Oura. Every morning, your watch will give you a score from 0 to 10 and advise you on how to proceed with exercise: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. The advice then updates throughout the day.A new Insights tab in the redesigned Health app, which is coming later this year, offers AI-powered recommendations based on your activity and data. The Health app will also use your data to display your Health Age and measure your Longevity. You’ll be able to see how your data compares to clinical recommendations and integrate your lab results. Both new watches have a new S11 chip that powers AI features, which Apple calls Audio Intelligence. Audio Intelligence uses AI combined with the watches’ built-in microphones for a few different purposes. For starters, it can listen for sounds and then notify you when, for instance, someone rings the doorbell, which will be particularly useful for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Another Audio Intelligence feature is Siri Recap, which takes notes from your conversations and creates an AI-generated summary. You can enable it and choose to always have it on, or you can schedule it to offer recaps at specific times of day. You can turn it on or off at any time. Audio is not recorded or stored and can’t be accessed by anyone, including Apple. The recaps are end-to-end encrypted, and speakers aren’t identified. The $400 Apple Watch Series 12 comes in 42 mm and 46 mm sizes in Space Gray, Black, Light Gold, and Dark Bronze aluminum. The cases have Ceramic Shield 2, similar to the iPhone. Series 12 is also available in a ceramic finish in Pearl White and Night Blue. Battery life remains unchanged at a day long, though this watch charges faster and lasts longer than previous models did when used outside. The $800 Ultra 4 gets more than two days of battery life, charges faster, and lasts longer outside. Its Max Extended Mode can help you eke out 45 hours on a charge. It comes in black or natural titanium in a 49 mm size. Both watches are available to preorder today, and they go on sale September 18.
